How to Use a Feelings Check-In Chart with Children (Home and Classroom)

A feelings check-in chart is a simple poster of different emotions that children use to show how they're feeling. It sounds small, but used every day it becomes one of the most useful habits a family or classroom can build.

Why check-ins work

  • They give children words, or pictures, for feelings they can't yet describe.
  • They make talking about feelings normal and everyday, not only when something has gone wrong.
  • They help adults spot patterns, like Monday worries or tiredness after school.
  • They're quick: two minutes is enough.

How to do a check-in at home

  1. Pick a regular time. Breakfast, the drive home or bedtime all work well.
  2. Ask one simple question: "Which one are you today?"
  3. Let them point or choose. No need to explain unless they want to.
  4. Share yours too. "I'm feeling a bit tired today."
  5. Follow up gently. "What made you feel excited?" and then listen.

How to do a check-in in the classroom

Many teachers put a chart by the door or on the carpet. Children can point, move a peg or a named card, or pick a character as they arrive. For children with SEND, a check-in first thing gives staff an early signal of who might need extra support that day. See what to look for in emotions books for children with SEND.

Tips

  • Every choice is okay. If a child picks "angry", thank them for telling you. Don't try to talk them out of it.
  • Keep the same characters. Familiar faces make it easier for younger children.
  • Track it over a week. A simple weekly tracker shows patterns you might miss.
