Secret Santa Gift Ideas for Him: Mugs, Caps and Notebooks Under £30

Male Secret Santa gifts tend to default to socks, beer or a novelty gadget that ends up in a drawer. A better approach is to find one thing he cares about, whether that's his job, a sport or a hobby, and pick something that names it.

If he has a hobby

Hobby gifts are the easiest win because they show you paid attention. A few of the ranges in our gift finder:

• Golf: mug, notebook, tote, water bottle and cap.
• Fishing: mugs, notebooks and a stainless steel water bottle for long days on the bank.
• Cycling and running ranges for the one who's always training.
• Board games and gaming for the one who'd rather stay in.

If you only know his job

Our Off Duty range covers dozens of jobs, such as the Off Duty Engineer mug and Off Duty Accountant mug. At £15 they sit comfortably inside most Secret Santa budgets. Browse them all in gift mugs.

More hobby and job ideas for him: gym lovers, walkers, mountain bikers, photographers, joiners, tree surgeons, taxi drivers and truck drivers.

If you know nothing at all

Go for a mug with a short, kind message. Men's mental health is something more people are talking about, and a mental health mug like Keep Going or You Matter says something without making a big deal of it. For a larger budget, see our men's mental health gifts, including organic cotton t-shirts.

Gifts to avoid

• Anything built on a joke about his age, weight or hairline.
• Alcohol, unless you're sure he drinks.
• Gadgets that need batteries or a specific phone.
